Hospitals and medical centers

Increasing hospital capacity with quick-to-build modular units.

COVID-19 brought space and capacity issues to light in almost every hospital in the province. The use of modular buildings and units has allowed many healthcare facilities to increase their bed capacity and reduce pressure on some hospital wards.

Technical details

Number of units: 36

At the beginning, the Verdun Hospital had a capacity of 244 beds. With the pandemic, they had to rearrange the multiple rooms to accommodate only one patient per room and thus avoid new outbreaks. The capacity having been greatly reduced, the addition of the modular building made it possible to accommodate a new care unit with a capacity of 36 individual rooms, each with a private washroom.

With an overall area of 3,000 square meters, the modular building is connected to the hospital by a walkway. The objective was to increase the hospital's capacity and thus reduce the pressure on the care units until the completion of the Verdun Hospital expansion and modernization project.

The extension added to the Verdun hospital includes a hospitalization unit on the 2nd floor and the hemato-oncology clinic on the ground floor.

The COVID-19 pandemic affects us all in one way or another and has brought increased pressure to bear on Quebec's health care system.

To address a bed shortage, CIUSS du Nord-de-l'Île-de-Montréal had to quickly build a 96-bed facility. Modular construction was the obvious solution.

In collaboration with Pomerleau Construction, RCM Group Modular Solutions successfully met the project’s very tight schedule while staying on budget.
Only five months after landing the contract, the Pomerleau & RCM team delivered the promised 96 beds.

The project took only a quarter of the time that a standard construction project would have taken.

We are proud to have contributed to this Hôpital du Sacré-Coeur project and to have pushed our limits. Innovation is one of our core values, and it is through projects like these that we prove we can achieve the impossible.
